Gerald B. File, Major, USMC

I was saddened to read of the death of Elie. I first met him when we were lieutenants with the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California in October 1962. Shortly after my reporting in, we mounted out as part of a Navy/Marine Corps task force to participate in the Cuban Missle Crisis going through the Panama Canal to potentially land to reinforce the Base at Guantanamo Bay. As the Adjutant and Personnel Officer, Elie was under enormous pressure to fulfill the requirements of the firing batteries as well as the Battalion staff. He performed this task extraordinarily well and earned the respect and admiration of all of us! About 15 years later, as a Major on reserve training at Camp Lejeune for 2 weeks, I was assigned to the artlllery battalion which he commanded. From my observations, he was highly regarded by both the troops he commanded as well as his staff officers. The Marine Corps has been fortunate to have officers and dynamic leaders such as Elie and I have always believed that the law professions loss was the Marine Corps gain!
