Obituary for Daniel Paul Maerten

Daniel Paul Maerten
Daniel Paul Maerten, 49, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away from pancreatic cancer on Friday, February 3, 2017, at the Hospice of the Panhandle with his loving family at his side.

Born January 26, 1968, in North Tonawanda, NY, he was the son of Gerald P. Maerten of Hinsdale, NY and the late Audrey Bachman Maerten.

Dan leaves a legacy of love and memories to his cherished wife of 26 years, Patti J. (Tantillo) Maerten, and beloved children, Serafina and Gabriel, along with their dog, Spooner; his father, Gerald; one sister, Deborah Maerten Duchesne of Mint Hill, NC; and seven nieces and nephews survive him.

He graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1990 with a B.A. in Philosophy and earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Catholic University Law School in Washington, DC. Dan worked as an attorney for CACI in Rosslyn, VA for 19 years.

As an active parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dan was a cantor, a member of the choir and Parish Council. In addition, he was a Knight of Columbus and Committee Chair with Boy Scout Troop 66.

Dan was a “Renaissance man” in many ways. He was intellectual and loved the outdoors, hiking many high peaks in the Adirondacks. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Dan’s Thanksgiving trip home to Hinsdale, NY, to hunt with his dad was an annual highlight.

Dan’s personal characteristics were exemplary: steadfast and faithful to God, family, friends and country. He was fun, deeply interested in others, a student of life, and genuinely loving. All who encountered him are better for knowing him. His kindness lives on in us.
