Joanna Phyllis Gess, 86, of Martinsburg, passed away at Hospice Inpatient Facility on Wednesday, December 28, 2016.

Born February 16, 1930 in Martinsburg, WV she was the daughter of the late Julian Jacob Gess and Ethel Elizabeth Smith.

She was a former elementary school teacher in Berkeley County and retired in 1989 after 36 years of service and 15 summers as a Headstart teacher. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and served as president of the Philathea Women's Sunday School class. She was a member of the Retired Berkeley County School Association, serving as their community service chairman. She was a past president of the Women's Democratic Club of Berkeley County, after being chosen in 1991 as the Outstanding Democrat of Berkeley County.

She is survived by numerous cousins.

Memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 22, 1017 at Brown Funeral Home at 2:00PM with Rev. Walter Bowers officiating.
