Obituary for Shirley Berniece Aikens (Barrett)

Shirley Berniece Barrett Aikens, 68, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at the Berkeley Medical Center.

Born January 29, 1948 in Martinsburg, WV she was the daughter of the late Frank and Gladys Miller Barrett.

Shirley devoted her life to caring for others, especially her family. Sam and Shirley served countless youth as foster parents in Berkeley County for many years. Her hobbies included making ceramics and collecting hummingbirds.

She is survived by her husband, Samuel Aikens; one son, Timothy Wayne Aikens; one daughter, Cheryl Aikens Mills and husband, Paul David Mills; four grandchildren, Joshua Blaine Mills, Timothy Wayne Aikens, Jr. and his sister, Ashley Smith and their mother, Deana Faircloth Smith, Daniel Aikens and his mother, Paula Wiley Breeden; two great-grandsons, Mason Thomas Mills and Elias Allen Aikens; one brother, Bruce Barrett; and one sister, Wilma Wanger.

She was preceded in death by nine siblings.

Family will receive friends on Friday, December 16, 2016 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Brown Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday from 12:00 Noon to 1:00PM at the church.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 1:00PM at Arden United Methodist Church Pastor Sarah Andrews Schlieckert officiating.

Interment will be in Arden Cemetery.
