Condolence: Tim was a U. S. Geological Survey colleague and a friend. It was always a joy to see Tim at a meeting or workshop and to hear him explain complex topics in an understandable way. All of us in the NC State University community have the family in our thoughts during this time of grief.

Condolence From: Joshua M. Shallom
Condolence: My heratfelt condolences to the family, friends and office and lab members. I have known Tim since 2010 when he hired me to work on one of his many projects -remotely from Blacksburg, VA. He was a very good person to work with, always encouraging and spending long hours to get the project done. A very scientifically curious person, he could not say "No" to any scientific project or proposal, because of which he was always working long hours. May his soul rest in peace. Joshua Shallom

Condolence: I wish to send my deepest condolences to Tim's family and colleagues! I met him first time in 2004 as a young PhD student at an international meeting for researchers working with various Atlantic salmon population genetic questions. Already then I knew who I'd like to be my opponent in the public examination on my thesis. It was a great joy to me when the dissertation was finally ready that Tim agreed to act as my thesis examiner and opponent. I have only wonderful memories of that day and the discussion we had. I couldn't have had a better and kinder opponent!

Condolence: I am so sorry to hear about Tim. I've known Tim for several years and had the honor of getting to know him even better when I came to WVU as their conservation geneticist. Tim has been a mentor to me, offering me much support and encouragement. He was a true inspiration. His passion for conservation and genetics was contagious. His kindness and thoughtfulness were a blessing and I am glad I knew him as not only my colleague, but as a friend. Tim leaves behind a tremendous legacy and continues to live on through all the lives he has touched in such a positive way... I hope knowing that brings you some comfort each day. My sincerest condolences.

I only worked with Tim for about two and a half years, but during that time I found him to be kind, generous, helpful, knowledgeable, creative, and VERY hard working. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. Sincerely, John Miller

Condolence: Dear Denise, we are truly sorry for your loss. I was blessed by Tim's generosity during a difficult time of my dissertation. When I had no money and no true mentor, he took me in. He picked me up at the airport and helped my find lodging. I was supposed to get technical issues ironed out in two weeks. Or so was the plan. When things did not worked as originally planned he invited me to stay until we got great data. Oh, about a year. I had the privilege to learn from him and to become part of his laboratory family. I treasure those days like gold. Thank you Tim for making a difference in my life. I will always have you in my heart. Always. Until we meet again my friend. Angela

Condolence From: Dr. Chris T. McAllister
Condolence: I am very sorry to hear the unexpected news of Tim's passing. He and I shared lab space at UNT as doctoral students in 1980-82. Tim was a fine field biologist and lab rat as well as a great colleague. I went on several field outings with Tim and colleagues and he was always the one that was smiling, joking, and generally having a good time. Most people don't know it, but Tim and I played many a game of tennis at UNT in our spare time as well as long nights of poker; he was usually better than I at both! Although I haven't seen Tim in many years, I was aware of his seminal work outside of UNT in genetics and molecular biology. What a loss, too soon, RIP.

Condolence: I wanted to express my condolences to Tim's family. Tim was a huge inspiration to me. He served on my dissertation committee, but was more than just a committee member. I wish I had taken the time to let him know that sitting down with him to discuss my project, evolution, molecular tools, etc. always reinvigorated me and changed the way I approached my career. He had a sense of hope and enthusiasm that I have never seen in another researcher. His knowledge, experience and kindness cannot be replaced. My heart goes out to his family.

Condolence: Dr. Tim King was a current member of my PhD dissertation committee. He had an understanding of the methods, the relation of my work to ecology, and the associated bioinformatics and statistical analyses used in my work that far surpasses any other member of the committee. Additionally, he was a government scientist, a position that is vitally important to conservation and restoration of species and habitats and one that I personally have a great deal of respect for. He will be truly missed among the environmental genetics community and by myself and other members of my lab. Very sorry for your loss.

Condolence From: Steve and Scarlett Settle
Condolence: Dear Denise, Brandon and Travis, Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. We have had the privilege to know you and Tim for a quite a few years now. We first met Tim on the baseball diamonds at Oatsdale Park as a dad first, then a coach. From an umpires perspective Tim was not your typical baseball dad, first he knew the rules and if he didn’t he would ask you for a clarification. At the end of game Tim would thank you for being there and giving up your time for youth baseball. This even continued thru his time with both boys playing high school baseball. Anytime we would run into Denise and Tim around town it would always end up in a 10 minute conversation about how the boys were doing or just to catch up regular Martinsburg gossip. I will miss those times with him. Tim was definitely one of the good people you meet in your journey thru life. B. Alan Wallace said “Life is a flash of lightning in the dark of night. It is a brief time of tremendous potential.” If you knew Tim King you know he lived up to his potential. Steve and Scarlett

Condolence: It was my privilege to work with Tim and to be his friend. He had the rare combination of exceptional scientist, vision for the future, and the drive and determination to make that vision a reality. Didn't care too much for the bureaucracy :), but he made everything work where many would give up. He did this for the cause of conservation science where his contributions were many and will inform and inspire future generations of genetic scientists. God speed, Tim, your earthly work is done.

Condolence From: Craig Primmer
Condolence: My sincere condolences. Tim was a wonderful colleague whom I had the pleasure to meet a number of times after first getting to know his exceptional research on Atlantic salmon population genetics through reading his key articles. Apart from discussions on salmon, he would often talk about his boys and how their baseball was going. The highlight however was when he took the duty of being the examiner of one of my PhD students and I had the pleasure of hosting Tim in Finland for a few days where we took him for a winter sauna experience and got him dressed up in tails for the official examination. I am happy to share some photos from that event if family/friends are interested. Just get in touch. Professor Craig Primmer, University of Turku, Finland

Condolence: I am saddened to hear about Tim's passing. He was a sincere and thoughtful geneticist, who helped to bring concern for unionid taxonomy to the next level. I know that I speak for mussel biologists when I say that Tim's science was top-notch, and whether you agreed with him or not, he was one of the most personable scientists you could meet. Mussel genetics and the Leetown Center has lost one of the best.

Condolence From: Kim Damon-Randall
Condolence: I am so very sorry for your loss. Tim was an exceptional person. He was incredibly generous with his time and knowledge and worked endlessly to ensure that the people he collaborated with had the information they needed and understood the information he provided. No one could explain genetic results like Tim. Even though he was enormously intelligent, when explaining things, he didn’t treat you like you were stupid but rather took the time to ensure that you understood the meaning behind the analyses he worked so tirelessly to provide. He was charming and witty and an overall great guy. He was also so much fun to be around. His contributions to science were immense, and he had a profound impact on so many of us who are honored to be able to call him a beloved friend and colleague. The diadromous species world has lost a tremendous supporter, and he will be greatly missed.
