Herbert Ward "Bobby"  Nicklin
Herbert Ward "Bobby" Nicklin, 92, of Hedgesville, WV, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 2, 2016 at home with his loving family by his side
Born April 23, 1923 in Martinsburg, WV, he was the son of the late Clarence Ward and Lillian B. Thompson Nicklin.
He was a 1941 graduate of Martinsburg High School. He later attended West Virginia University and Shepherd College, where he obtained his Bachelor's (A.B) Degree; and then the University of Maryland, where he earned his Master's (M.A.) Degree.
Mr. Nicklin was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, with which he was stationed on the U.S.S. Argonne and served in the Pacific Theater.
He was employed by the West Virginia Department of Human Services for 35 years as Assistant Commissioner of Operations for the entire state as well as Assistant Commissioner for the state Medicaid Program. He was the recipient of the Distinguished West Virginian award given by three different governors. He was instrumental in building the WV Juvenile Detention Center. He also served a number of years on the State Council of Aging.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity of West Virginia University. Additionally, he was a past member of the Salvation Army Advisors Board, the American Red Cross Advisory Board, and the Eastern Panhandle Training Center Board of Directors.
He is survived by one son, Robert P. Nicklin of Jacksonville Beach, FL; eight daughters, Cynthia Nicklin of Denton, MD, Susan Dillon of Crested Butte, CO, and Mary Effland of Jones Springs, Carol Zirpolo of Adamstown, MD, Nancy Triggs of Inwood, and Rebekah Gray, Francine Kinder and Laureen Burris of Marlowe; nineteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lyle Prince Nicklin of Martinsburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Stilwell Kershner Nicklin; one son, Cyrus Ward Nicklin; his first wife, Rose Virginia Gregg Nicklin; and a sister, Dorothy Marie Nicklin Brown.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, March 6, 2016, 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Brown Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday, March 7, 2016 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Ed Taylor officiating. Military graveside honors will be in Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
